Introduction

Use apps faster with Universal Launcher

What is Universal Launcher?

Universal Launcher is an app launcher with a command line user experience similar to that of Alfred for Mac or MacOS's native Spotlight launcher (if you're on a Mac and you don't know what this is, hit cmd + space ). Beyond opening apps, Universal Launcher lets (even non-technical) users configure and execute keyword shortcuts for performing common actions with their apps without needing to expend valuable attention on navigating diverse graphical user interfaces with their mouse.

What makes it "Universal"?

Unlike other popular app launchers, Universal Launcher is designed to work on any operating system (mainly so that users like ourselves are never left without access to their trusty shortcuts!). Currently, we support Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android.

Understanding the Command Bar

Break free from the loop of clicks and keystrokes

The shortcut to open up your UL Command Bar is command+space (mac) or ctrl+space (pc)

Command Bar Basics (from left to right)

Under the input (where you type after opening up the UL Command Bar), we have Icon, Application Name, Action, and Shortcuts to execute Action .

What do these mean?

  • Icon

    • An image that represents the application or shortcut

  • Application Name

Why is it faded?

An application that is slightly faded, means you must install the plugin in order to use the shortcut. This can be done by clicking or pressing Command + 1 / CTRL + 1

What does UL Plugin - <Plugin Name> mean in the Action?

Anytime you see UL Plugin - <Plugin Name> this means if you perform this action, you will be taken directly to that specific plugin's page in your UL Application. Plugin pages will hold Guides that explain the plugin in more depth.

In the image, we typed no
  • This displayed two applications under the input

  • Action

    • In the image, you can see if we click on those it will open the application or take us to the UL Plugin page for Notion.

  • Shortcuts for executing

Has this ever happened to you? You're in the zone typing out your latest trillion-dollar idea in the form of a UL Trello shortcut when, suddenly, your neck hairs stand on end. Because it just occurred to you, is everything I type in this magic machine being saved in a database? Does it get encrypted beforehand? Moreover, will Mason be able to steal it and all the credit, any/all of my best ideas for apps that...? Rest easy. While I'm sure you have extremely high quality, even steal-worthy, ideas, and respect that that is why we're all so rich already, Universal Launcher doesn't need to store anything you write off your nearest supported device. If we did need to, we'd encrypt it, your latest IP, but, at least with UL's current feature set, we don't. If that changes, if like, we decide to implement cross-device clipboard history sync and backup, we'll let you know. And then opt out of that shit. UL 🧡 disobedient citizens and always will. So keep on typing, type "Mason is pretty annoying, he should go eat shit for dinner."

    Finish Line!

UL collects information related to how and how often you choose to use it or not. We're kind of sorry about that, and it's something we should back off of once we're confident enough in the product, but, pre-revenue, it's the only data we can use to grade ourselves. That's no excuse not to be transparent 👇

    Universal Launcher plugins explained

Plugins are integrations that allow you to create shortcuts for 3rd party apps.

    Installing plugins

To use a plugin, you need to "install" it.

    Authorization

Often plugins require you to authenticate with the 3rd party app they integrate with. If this is the case, clicking install will do one of two things.

    1. Take you to their sign in page where you will need to grant UL permission to use the app on your behalf, before redirecting you back to Universal Launcher.

    2. Request that you submit a personal access token or other secret.

Access can be revoked at any time simply by uninstalling a plugin.

    1. Click on the shortcut option on the top right

    1. A shortcut sidebar will open allowing you to create a shortcut. Slacks will look similar to this. Lets make a shorcut to DM someone and always have it send them a fun emoji.

    1. Set a keyword that you will type in the command bar to use a shortcut.

    1. Action should be send message, and under target, you can search slack for the person, group, or channel you want to message

    1. Find an emoji, and type its text into the Template replacing the $1

You might not have this emotion. Trying something like  or ay type of text!

We can use the template ($1) to set up an emoji. Template allows you to put anything here that will send at the start of every message for your new shortcut.

For example, if I put G in place of $1, a G will be at the front of every message I send Mason. We are going to use it to send an emoji.

    1. Click save and test your command!

    2. Open your UL Launcher CMD + Space

    3. Type as followed by a message and send!

You can see my "as" shortcut at the beginning.
Rockstar emoji followed by my message.

As soon as you need to communicate an idea, a response, a simple good morning, communicate that idea at near thought to text speed.

  • Follow the authorization steps

    1. Before clicking Allow, select your workspace on the top right

    1. Open the Launcher CMD + Space

    5. Hit Return once you find them

    6. Hit Return again and jump directly to that conversation

    Why is this useful?

Do not get distracted by other messages in slack. Jump directly to the person you need to talk to as soon as you need to talk to them. Up next, send a direct message to someone by creating a shortcut in Universal Launcher.
